Date of Birth: 30th August 1967.
Home Town: Castleford, West Yorkshire.
Date entered martial arts: October 2001. (Although attended some Karate classes back in the 70’s at junior school!)
Date entered Selby Shotokan Karate Club: After date of first 2002 grading – March-ish I think.
Karate Highs: When I do something right – and kumite is a favourite. Also training (fighting?!!) with my friends.
Karate Lows: Making mistakes, not being flexible enough, and never being quite good enough. Also when ego gets in the way of the proper spirit of karate. I think we’ve all being guilty of this at some point – even the masters I would say.
Favourite Kata: Hard to say, as kata is not my favourite part of karate. There are elements of particular kata that I like. Fumikomi in Jion is a great sequence. The end moves of Nijushiho – I’d love to see proper application of those. I like Wankan and Jin – these are well outside my grade and expertise, but we don’t study them enough in my opinion, they may get forgotten and that’s a shame. My grade kata? Jion I suppose.
Karate Ambitions: : Simple – to be the best I can be (allowing for age and inability that is!). Acquiring ‘grades’ is a bit like stamp-collecting - I’m not in it to collect stamps (not rushing to get my penny-black haha!) I’m in it to keep fit, have fun and keep the journey going. I’m never going to stop learning and applying what I’ve learned to things even outside karate.
Other Interests: I love riding my motorbike. I play the guitar. Electronics – I like old analogue synthesisers, the home-built stuff (space-age noises!) – basically anything science-fiction and ‘spoddy’ is interesting. Last, but certainly not least – lots of my time spent in ‘Dad-mode’ with my almost eight year old Son – the coolest dude in the whole World.
